Hiring a wedding DJ in Sweden: when to book, what to ask and what the price depends on
Updated 26 October 2026 · Written by Lysela
Book your wedding DJ as soon as you have a date and a venue, and ask what is included: how long the DJ plays, what equipment comes along and what travel adds. The price of a wedding DJ depends on exactly those things, so no single figure fits everyone. A DJ reads the room, takes requests and keeps the dance floor going. Below are a comparison with a band and a playlist, questions to ask, an email to adapt and how to hand over your songs.
Try it yourself, no account neededHiring a wedding DJ: when to book and what the price depends on
Ask for a quote that shows what is included, so you can compare two DJs on the same terms. How a DJ fits into the rest of your money is in the budget guide.
When to book
As soon as the date and venue are settled. Saturdays in summer are the days most couples want, and a DJ you like can be taken long in advance.
Playing time
The price usually follows the number of hours. Count from the first dance to the last song and ask what an extra hour costs.
Equipment
Sound system, lights and a microphone for the speeches may be included or optional. Some venues have their own system.
Travel and set-up
Travel, an overnight stay and the time to set up and test the sound before guests arrive can be added.
Day and season
A Saturday in midsummer can cost more than a Friday or a date outside the season.
Band or DJ for a wedding: how they differ
You can also combine them: a band during dinner and a DJ for the dancing, or a playlist during dinner and a DJ after the cake.
| DJ | Band | Own playlist | |
|---|---|---|---|
| The music | Original recordings in many genres, adjusted to the crowd. | Covers or their own songs, and the repertoire is what the band knows. | What you added in advance, with nobody reading the room. |
| The mood | The dancing can run without breaks. | Live music and something to watch, but pauses between sets. | The same tone all evening unless someone changes it. |
| Space and tech | A table, power and a sound system. | A stage or larger area, power and time for a sound check. | Speakers and a friend who looks after playback and volume. |
| Price | Depends on playing time, equipment and travel. | Depends on the number of musicians, playing time and travel. | Costs the least, but someone has to look after it all evening. |
Questions to ask a wedding DJ
Playing time and overtime
How many hours are included, and what does it cost if the party runs on?
Equipment
Do sound, lights and a microphone come along, and do you need to arrange power or space?
Set-up
When does the DJ arrive, and is there time to test the sound before guests come?
Requests and language
How does the DJ take a list of songs you want and do not want, and what happens with guests' requests? If your guests mix Swedish and English, ask whether the DJ is comfortable running the evening in both.
Cancellation and payment
What applies if the date changes, and when is payment due?
Hello [name], we are getting married on [date] at [venue] in [town], with about [number] guests. We are looking for a DJ from [time] to [time]. Are you available then? We would also like to know what is included in the price and what is optional, whether sound, lights and a microphone come along, how much time you need to set up and what applies if we cancel. We have a list of songs we want to hear and a few we would rather skip. How would you like to receive it? Kind regards [names]
The music through the evening: a plan to adapt
Go through the times with the DJ and with the toastmaster, so the music stops when the speeches begin and starts again at the right moment.
| Time | Moment | Music |
|---|---|---|
| 16.45 | Drinks reception | Quiet background music you can talk over. |
| 18.15 | Dinner | Low volume. Silent when the speeches start. |
| 21.30 | Cake and coffee | Something soft, so guests notice the dancing is near. |
| 22.00 | First dance | Your song, then one everybody knows so more people dare to join. |
| 22.15 | Dancing | Songs for all generations first, newer ones later. |
| 00.00 | Late-night food | A slower tempo while people eat. |
| 00.45 | Last song | The one you chose in advance. |
A wedding playlist for the DJ: what to play and what to avoid
Which songs suit the ceremony, your entrance and the first dance is in the wedding songs guide. Here are the lists you hand to the DJ. Mark what must be played and what is a wish, so the DJ can read the room.
Must play: [song], [artist] Would like: [song], [song], [song] First dance: [song], [artist] Last song: [song], [artist]
Do not play: [song], [artist] Do not play: [artist or genre] If a guest asks for [song], check with us first.
Let guests request songs for the DJ
Collect requests on the wedding website instead of in messages that disappear. Guests write the song, the artist and, if they like, their name, and they do not have to answer the RSVP first. You download the list as a text file, one line per song, and give it to the DJ. A duplicate or a song you do not want to hear you can remove. On the example sites you can request a song as a guest.
Write a song you want to dance to. We will give the list to the DJ before the evening.

Song requests on your wedding website
With Lysela, song requests are on the wedding website in every tier. Guests write a song and, if they like, their name, without answering the RSVP first. You see the requests gathered, remove what you do not want and download the list as a file to give the DJ. You write the line above the list yourselves.
You pay once, SEK 795, SEK 1,795 or SEK 4,900 including VAT, and the site stays up for 12 months.
What usually goes on a wedding website, and what one costs, is in the checklist.
Frequently asked questions
How much does a wedding DJ cost in Sweden?
It depends on playing time, equipment, travel and the day. Ask two or three DJs for a quote that shows what is included, so you can compare them.
When should we book a wedding DJ?
As soon as the date and venue are decided. Summer Saturdays go first.
Should we have a band or a DJ at our wedding?
A band gives live music and something to watch, a DJ gives more songs and dancing without breaks. Many couples have a band for dinner and a DJ for the dancing.
How does the DJ get the guests' song requests?
You collect them on the wedding website and download the list as a file. Give it to the DJ together with your own lists of what to play and what to skip.
