Civil wedding in Umeå: book through the municipality and what applies

Updated 26 October 2026 · Written by

You book a civil wedding in Umeå through Umeå kommun, with a booking form, at least two weeks before the ceremony. In the municipality's wedding room in Rådhuset (the town hall) the ceremony costs nothing, and you can also choose your own venue and your own officiant. The municipality's wedding pages mention no drop-in ceremony. This guide covers how to book, what applies in the wedding room, how a venue of your own works and how to tell your guests where to be. For how a civil ceremony works in general, see the guide to a civil wedding in Sweden.

Book a civil wedding in Umeå: step by step

  • Apply for the eligibility check

Apply in good time to Skatteverket, the Swedish Tax Agency, through its form or on 0771-567 567. The eligibility check is valid for four months and the ceremony must take place within that time. You get a certificate and a form for the marriage certificate, and you give both to the officiant.

  • Choose a place

Either the wedding room in Rådhuset in central Umeå, where the municipality books the room and an officiant, or a venue of your own with your own officiant. You state your choice in the form.

  • Send the booking form

It is on umea.se. You fill in your names, personal ID numbers or birth dates, address and the date and time you want. You pick the time in steps of 15 minutes. Booking at least two weeks ahead is enough.

  • Wait for confirmation

The date and time are not final until you have received a booking confirmation from the municipality.

  • Ask the wedding office

Email vigsel@umea.se or phone 090-16 12 10. The page gives no phone hours.

Civil wedding officiant in Umeå: your own venue instead of Rådhuset

The officiants in Umeå kommun are appointed by the County Administrative Board, and the municipality's page lists them by name. If you want to marry at home, in a hired venue or in a park, you say so in the booking form. You then pay any venue rent and the officiant's travel costs. If you have no officiant of your own, the municipality gives you contact details for one when you book.

The officiant does not usually meet the couple beforehand but phones before the ceremony to go through the details.

Email to vigsel@umea.se when you have no officiant

Hello, we have booked a ceremony at [place] on [date] at [time] and have no officiant of our own. Could you send us contact details for one? Our eligibility certificate is valid until [date]. Kind regards [name] and [name]

Drop-in civil wedding in Umeå: does it exist?

The municipality's wedding pages mention no drop-in ceremony. In January 2023 the municipal council rejected a motion to introduce one. The municipality would then have had to offer every couple musicians, witnesses and non-alcoholic bubbly, and the budget had no room for it.

The minutes also note that the eligibility check at Skatteverket takes about two weeks and must be done before the ceremony even for a drop-in. If you want to marry in a small circle, the municipality only requires two witnesses, so start with the eligibility check and then book a time.

With Lysela, you put the ceremony venue and the party venue under Places, each with an address, a time, a note and a link for directions. The programme has a calendar link, and on the wedding day the page shows at the top what is happening now and next and when the next bus leaves. Guests answer the RSVP on their phone, with no app and no account. All of that is in every tier, from Bas. From Plus the site also comes with English headings, buttons and RSVP form for guests who do not read Swedish.

You start without an account and pay once, SEK 795, SEK 1,795 or SEK 4,900 including VAT, and the site stays up for 12 months.
