Wedding thank-you cards: what to write and when to send them

Updated 6 October 2026 · Written by

Send the thank-you cards while the wedding is fresh in everyone's mind, ideally within a month. Write a few lines to each guest or household: thank them for coming, mention their gift or what they did for you, and close with a greeting from you both. A photo from the day makes the card personal. Here is wording to start from.

Try it yourself, no account needed

When should thank-you cards go out?

As soon as you have the photos from your photographer, or earlier if you would rather not wait for them. A thank-you that arrives after a few weeks feels warmer than one that arrives after six months, but a late thank-you beats none at all.

Make it easier on yourselves: note who gave what at the party itself, or ask someone to, and split the cards between the two of you.

What goes in a thank-you card?

  • Thanks for coming

This matters most, and every guest should get it.

  • The gift or what they did

Mention what they gave, or what they did: a speech, a song, help with the tables. For money, thank them for the contribution without naming the amount.

  • Something personal

One sentence about a memory from the day does more than three general ones.

  • Both your names

Sign with both names, even if one of you wrote the card.

A card, a text or a thank-you on the wedding website?

A printed card is the most formal, and many guests like one to keep. A text or a message in the group chat works well for people you already write to, and is quick the day after. Many couples do both: a shared thank-you right after the party, and cards for everyone once the photos are ready.

If guests gave money by Swish and you know who gave what, see the guide to cash gifts.

A thank-you on the wedding website the day after

At Lysela, the wedding website can turn into a thank-you the day after, in every tier: a photo and a few words from the two of you, at the address your guests already have. You switch the thank-you on when you like, and the guest book stays on the page, so it is easy to see who wrote what when you sit down with the cards.

You pay once, SEK 795, SEK 1,795 or SEK 4,990 including VAT, and the site stays up for 12 to 18 months depending on the tier.

Common questions

How long after the wedding do you send thank-you cards?

Ideally within a month, or once the photographer's pictures are ready. What matters is that everyone gets a thank-you.

Does every guest need a thank-you card?

Everyone should be thanked. One card per household is enough, and you can write a little more to those who did something extra.

Should you mention how much money you received?

No. Thank them for the contribution, and perhaps say what it will go towards, without naming the amount.

Can you say thank you by text?

Yes, especially the day after. Many still send a card with a photo later, since it is something to keep.
