Cash wedding gifts: how to ask and how guests give
Updated 1 October 2026 · by Ludvig Lindqvist Rovira, Lysela
Asking for money as a wedding gift is perfectly normal, for example towards the honeymoon or your home. Mention it once, briefly and kindly, on the wedding website or the invitation, and say what the money is for. Guests then give through Swish or in an envelope at the party. Here are wordings to copy and answers to what guests usually ask.
Try it yourself, no account neededIs it all right to ask for money?
Yes. Many couples already live together and have most of what they need, and guests are often relieved not to have to guess. Put it as a wish, and ideally say what the money will become. "A contribution to our trip" feels more personal than an account number.
Some guests will still want to give a thing. That is fine, and you do not need to explain yourselves to them.
How to word a cash gift request
One sentence is enough, on the wedding website or at the bottom of the invitation. Replace whatever is in square brackets.
Having you there is the best gift we could ask for. If you would like to give something, a contribution to our honeymoon in [place] would make us very happy.
We have everything we need at home. If you would like to give a gift, we would love a contribution to [for example a new kitchen], by Swish to [number].
Your company is gift enough. If you would still like to give something, you can Swish [number] and mark the payment "wedding".
If you would like to give a joint gift, please contact our toastmaster [name] on [phone number].
Swish, envelope or collection?
| Way | Good when | Keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| Swish to the couple | Most guests in Sweden have Swish, and they can give before, during or after the party. | Give the number and what to write in the message, so you know who gave what. |
| An envelope at the party | Guests who want something to hand over, ideally with a card. | Set out a box or basket and ask someone to look after it during the evening. |
| Collection through the toastmaster | Guests who want to give a joint gift. | The toastmaster needs to know the goal and the last day to contribute. |
How much do guests give?
There is no set amount, and you should not suggest one. Guests give according to their own finances and how close they are to you.
Thank everyone the same way, whatever the amount, with a card or a thank-you on the wedding website afterwards.

A Swish gift on your wedding website with Lysela
With Lysela, from Plus, you add your Swish number and what the money is for, and the site shows a QR code in Swish's own design. Guests scan it, and the number and your message are already filled in. They only type the amount. No money passes through us.
Common questions
Is it tacky to ask for money as a wedding gift?
No, it is common now. Put it kindly, as a wish, and ideally say what the money is for.
Should we say how much we would like?
No. Let guests decide the amount themselves, and thank everyone the same way.
Where should the wish go?
On the wedding website or at the bottom of the invitation, once. It does not need to be on the save the date.
How do we know who gave what?
Ask guests to write their names in the Swish message, or to put a card in the envelope. It makes thank-you cards easier.
