Civil wedding in Linköping: booking, City Hall and rules

You book a civil wedding in Linköping by contacting the officiant who is on duty on your date. At Linköping City Hall (Stadshuset) the municipality holds ceremonies on Thursdays and Fridays between 09:00 and 15:00 in the Thorell room, and the ceremony costs nothing. The municipality recommends no more than ten participants. If you want another day or another place, you contact any officiant, and the officiant's travel costs are added. Apply for the eligibility check
You apply to Skatteverket, the Swedish Tax Agency, and the eligibility check is valid for four months. If you do not marry within that time you must apply again.
Hand in the certificates in time
Skatteverket sends a certificate of the eligibility check and one for the ceremony. You give them to the officiant at least two weeks before the ceremony.
Arrange two witnesses
You arrange them yourselves. They must be of age and able to show ID, and you give their names, home addresses and postal addresses at least two weeks before the ceremony.
Contact the officiant
You contact the officiant who is on duty on the day you want to marry. The contact details are on the municipality's page.
After the ceremony
The officiant sends the marriage certificate to Skatteverket. The municipality writes that registration in the population register can take five to six weeks, and you receive a keepsake card that has no legal meaning.

Civil wedding officiants in Linköping and their schedule
The municipality has several officiants who take turns. Its page has a schedule of which weeks each one is on duty, for 2026 and 2027, along with address, mobile number and email. A few are listed as available on request. Look up the week of your date, contact whoever is on duty then and ask whether you can have a time.
If you want to marry on another day or at a place other than City Hall, you contact any officiant. The municipality writes that the officiant's travel costs are then added but gives no amount on the page, so ask for the sum before you decide.

Getting married in Linköping when one of you lives abroad
You apply for the eligibility check at Skatteverket, and the application costs nothing. If one of you is not registered as resident in Sweden, that person has to show that there is no impediment. That is usually ID showing you are over 18, a declaration that you are not closely related, a certificate of civil status from the country where you live, preferably issued within the last four months, and, if you have been married before, proof that the marriage has ended.
