Honeymoon ideas from Sweden: when to go and where
Updated 26 October 2026 · Written by Lysela
Most couples leave within a few weeks of the wedding, but it works just as well to wait for a time of year that suits the destination. Start with two questions: how many days off do you have, and what do you want to do when you arrive? The answers decide whether it is a week in southern Europe, a longer trip further away or a weekend in Sweden. Here is how to choose the timing, which destinations suit which month, how to set a budget and how guests can contribute.
Try it yourself, without an accountWhen should you go on your honeymoon?
Put the trip into your timeline once you know the wedding date, so that leave and bookings land in the right place from the start.
Straight after the wedding
You do not have to wait, and the wedding is still fresh. Still leave a night at home or at the hotel after the party, so that you do not travel the day you also clear the venue.
A few months later
Suits a wedding that falls in a hard season to travel, or couples who want to rest first. You can then choose the season by destination and book when tickets are cheaper, if they are.
A weekend first, the big trip later
A short honeymoon weekend can be a hotel or a cabin not far from home. The big trip can wait until the holiday days and the money are there.
Honeymoon destinations by month, from September to spring
The table is a guide. Climate differs between countries and years, so check the weather for the destination and the week you choose.
| Time of year | Destinations that tend to suit | Keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| May and June | Southern Europe with pleasant warmth, the Swedish coast, the Alps | Many weddings fall here, so popular hotels fill early. |
| July and August | The Nordics, the archipelago, the mountains, cooler parts of Europe | Southern Europe can be hot, and peak season raises prices. |
| September | The Mediterranean while the sea is still warm, and early autumn in Sweden | Often calmer than in summer. |
| October | Southern Europe with cooler days, cities and wine, an autumn cabin in Sweden | Swimming weather is uncertain, so choose culture and food over a beach. |
| November | Warm countries in their drier season, or a spa weekend in Sweden | Check the stormy season for the area you are looking at. |
| December to March | Warmth far away, or snow and sauna in the north | Christmas and New Year are the most expensive and most booked. |
Honeymoon in Europe or in Sweden?
Talk through what you want to do, not only where you want to be. Rest, adventure and food are three quite different trips.
Honeymoon in Europe
You avoid long flights and can often travel at short notice. For a city or a coast, a week is plenty.
Honeymoon in Sweden
Archipelago, mountains, a cabin by a lake or a hotel in another city. It is easy to book and can be done in a weekend if your leave is short.
Further away
Needs more days, more planning and often vaccinations or a visa. Find out what applies well in advance.
How to think about the honeymoon budget
Start with a ceiling
Decide a sum for the whole trip before you start looking. The trip competes with the rest of the wedding, so set it next to your wedding budget.
Count the whole trip
Flights or trains, accommodation, food, outings, insurance and money for the unexpected. What gets forgotten is usually food and getting around once you are there.
Pick one thing to spend on
A really good place to stay, an experience you have longed for or a longer stay. All three at once is seldom possible.
Put money aside early
Set aside a sum each month until the wedding, so that the trip is not paid from whatever is left over.
Booking the honeymoon: tips
The name must match the passport
Tickets are booked in the name on the passport. If one of you is changing surname after the wedding, find out how to handle the passport and tickets before you book. There is more in the guide to changing your name.
Check the passport validity
Many countries require the passport to be valid for a set time after the return journey. Look well in advance, because a new passport takes time.
Book something you can change
Weddings and plans shift. Choose flights and accommodation you can cancel or change, and take travel insurance.
Keep a day or two clear after the wedding
Book the departure one or two days after the party, so that you have time to sleep, open gifts and pack.
How to ask guests to contribute to the honeymoon
On the example pages you can see what a wish list with Swish looks like to guests.
The best gift is having you there. If you would like to give something, we would be glad of a contribution to our honeymoon in [place].
We dream of eating our way through [place] in [month]. A contribution makes it possible, and we will happily tell you how it went when we are home.
We are saving for the trip, but a gift from our wish list is just as welcome. What matters most is that you celebrate with us.

The wish list on your wedding website
At Lysela, the Wish list section comes with Plus. You enter your Swish number and a line about what the money is for, such as the honeymoon, and the page shows a QR code in Swish's own design. The guest scans it, and your number and message are already filled in. The guest only types the amount. No money passes through us.
You pay once, SEK 795, SEK 1,795 or SEK 4,900 including VAT, and the site stays up for 12 months.
What usually goes on a wedding website, and what one costs, is in the checklist.
Frequently asked questions
When do you go on a honeymoon?
Either within a few weeks of the wedding or months later, when leave, money and weather suit the destination. A short weekend straight after the wedding and the big trip later is a common middle way.
Which month is best for a honeymoon?
It depends on the destination. September often has a warm Mediterranean sea, while October and November suit cities, food and culture in southern Europe. Check the climate for your exact week.
Who pays for the honeymoon?
Usually the couple. If you would like help, you can ask for a contribution to the trip instead of gifts, and say so once on your wedding website.
How long should a honeymoon be?
There is no rule. A weekend, a week and a month are all fine, as long as it fits your leave and budget.
