Autumn wedding in Sweden: ideas for colours, flowers, dress and timing

Updated 26 October 2026 · Written by

An autumn wedding works best when you build the day around the light and the weather. Hold the ceremony early in the afternoon, since the sun sets before five in late October. Choose colours that are already outside, such as rust, burgundy and forest green, and flowers that are in season. Have a plan for rain and tell guests what to wear. Here is why couples choose autumn, how the timeline looks, which colours and flowers suit it, what guests wear and how to handle the rain.

Why have an autumn wedding in Sweden?

Against that are the rain, the cold and the days that shorten quickly. Build that into the plan from the start.

  • The light is soft

The sun sits low and gives warm photos all day. Portraits are easier than in the sharp light of a summer midday.

  • Nature does the decorating

Leaves, berries and grasses are right outside. You need fewer things on the tables for them to look full.

  • Venues have more open dates

Summer Saturdays are booked early, and September and October are often easier. Prices can be lower too, so ask the venue.

  • Guests have open calendars

Holidays are over and many people know their autumn. Send your save the date in good time, since family and friends are planning already.

Autumn wedding timeline when it gets dark early

Count back from sunset and ask your photographer when it gets dark where you are marrying. In September a ceremony in the late afternoon still works, but in late October it has to be earlier. Build the rest of the day with the guide to a wedding day timeline.

Autumn wedding colours and flowers in season

Autumn colours are warm and deep: rust, terracotta, mustard, burgundy, plum and forest green. They work well with white, cream and a little gold. How to choose them and keep them together is in the guide to a wedding theme and colours.

  • The autumn bridal bouquet

Dahlias, roses and dried flowers keep well and look full. Ask your florist what is in season on that date, and read more in the guide to the bridal bouquet.

Autumn wedding: what should guests wear?

The dress code is the same as for any wedding, but guests also have to manage walking outside in wind and rain. The answer to what to wear belongs on the wedding website. More about the codes is in the guide to the wedding dress code.

  • Suit and jacket

A wool or tweed suit in dark colours works. A coat or trench over it keeps you warm and dry.

  • Dress and outfit

A longer skirt, heavier fabrics and something over the shoulders. Autumn colours suit well, and black or white are always fine.

  • Shoes

Shoes that cope with wet grass and gravel. Heels sink, so suggest a pair to change into.

  • Umbrellas

Put a basket of umbrellas at the entrance. Then guests do not have to bring their own.

Formal wear. It may be windy and wet outside, so bring a coat and shoes that can take grass. We have umbrellas at the door.

If you ask for a colour

We like rust, burgundy and green, but come in whatever you feel good in.

Rain and cold: a plan for autumn weather

  • Have a room inside

Ask the venue what applies if the ceremony moves indoors and whether everyone fits. Decide who makes the call and when, ideally the day before.

  • Warmth outside

Blankets on the chairs and heaters by the drinks area keep guests outside longer. Ask the venue what is allowed.

  • A roof over the table

A tent or a veranda makes dinner outdoors possible. Check that it has sides as shelter from the wind.

  • Put the news in one place

Write on your wedding website where the ceremony is if it rains. There is more on travel in the guide to getting guests to the wedding.

Weather note for the wedding website

It may rain, so bring a jacket. If the ceremony moves inside we will write it here by [time] on the wedding day. Umbrellas and blankets are on site.

An autumn wedding and your wedding website

When the weather can change the plan, guests need to know where to find the news. On the wedding website are the times, directions, buses and dress code, and you can write a line on what applies if it rains. Among the styles, Lantlig (green, linen), Bohemisk (terracotta, sand) and Sammet (burgundy, gold) give an autumn feel, and the film Sol genom löv shows evening sun through leaves in a park. On the example pages you can see how it looks to a guest.

Klara & Hampus's save the date in the Boho style: pink flowers in the film, the names and the date.

A wedding website for an autumn wedding

With Lysela the venues with directions, the programme, the buses, the accommodation tips and the dress code are on the page in every tier, so guests can see them if the plan changes. You write a line about the dress code and pick up to six colours for it. Guests reply from their phones, one reply per household.

You pay once, SEK 795, SEK 1,795 or SEK 4,900 including VAT, and the site stays up for 12 months.

What usually goes on a wedding website, and what one costs, is in the checklist.
