Summer wedding in Sweden: tips for dates, heat, dress and a late party

Updated 26 October 2026 · Written by

A summer wedding works well if you do three things: book the date and venue early, hold the ceremony when the sun is not at its highest, and tell guests what to wear. Summer Saturdays fill up first, the light lasts far into the evening and the heat shapes more of the day than people expect. Here are tips on dates, sun and water, the late party, dress for men, women and guests, and Midsummer.

Summer wedding tips: dates and booking

  • Saturdays go first

Summer is high season for weddings, and Saturdays are often booked well ahead. Contact the venue as soon as you have two or three dates that could work.

  • Ask about Fridays and Sundays

A Friday is more often available, and guests can travel home the next day without taking Monday off.

  • Send the date early

Many people have holidays and travel booked in July. The sooner guests know which weekend it is, the more of them can come.

  • Have a plan for rain

A marquee, a room indoors or a roof over the table. If you are marrying at home or in a garden, there is more in the guide to a garden wedding.

Question for the venue

Hello, we are looking for a venue for a wedding with [number] guests in [month]. Which Saturdays and Fridays are available, and what happens to the booking if it rains? Kind regards, [name] and [name]

Sun and heat: setting the timeline

The sun is strongest in the middle of the day, and shade is hardest to find. Hold the ceremony in the afternoon and the portraits later, when the light is softer and the heat has settled. Ask your photographer when the light is best where you are marrying.

TimeSuggestionWorth knowing
15.00Guests arrive and get something cold to drink.Put out water in the shade. Seats should not stand in full sun.
16.00The ceremony.Sun straight in the face makes for squinting. Turn the chairs so the sun comes from the side.
17.00Drinks and group photo.Keep the photos short. Have shade and water close by.
18.30Dinner.The evening light is soft. Lay the tables so nobody faces the sun.
21.00Speeches, cake and dancing. It is still light. Have a cardigan or blanket for guests when it cools.

Light nights and the late party

Around Midsummer the sun sets at about ten in southern Sweden, and further north it never gets properly dark. Guests often stay longer when it is light, and the party can run on.

  • Decide when it ends

Ask the venue when the music has to stop, and put the finishing time on your wedding website.

  • Put the journey home in one place

The last bus, taxis and car sharing are what guests ask about. There is more in the guide to getting guests to the wedding.

  • Plan something to eat late

After a couple of hours of dancing a sandwich, soup or coffee with something sweet is welcome.

  • Think about mosquitoes

By the water and at the edge of a forest they arrive with the evening. Keep repellent in a basket by the entrance.

Summer wedding dress code: what should guests wear?

The dress code is the same as for any wedding, but the fabric, colour and shoes follow the heat. Put the code on your wedding website so everyone knows what applies. What a blazer, dark suit and tuxedo mean is in the guide to the wedding dress code.

  • Blazer

Works well in summer. Pick linen or cotton in a light colour and a shirt without a tie. The jacket can hang on the chair when it is warm.

  • Dark suit

Fine, especially in the evening and in church. Choose lightweight wool in a thin weave and a shirt that breathes. Say that jackets may come off.

  • Dress, skirt and suit

Light fabrics such as cotton, silk and linen. Light colours suit, but avoid all white. Bring something for the shoulders for the evening.

  • Shoes and sun protection

If the party is on grass or gravel, flat shoes or block heels work best. Sunglasses and a hat help during the ceremony.

Dress code for a summer wedding

Dress code: blazer. Light fabrics and light colours are fine, and no tie is needed. The party is on grass, so choose shoes to match. Bring a cardigan for the evening.

If you want a dark suit

Dress code: dark suit. It may get warm, so jackets can come off once we sit down to dinner. A dress, a suit or a jumpsuit are equally welcome.

Midsummer and other summer dates

Colours and flowers that belong to the season are covered in the guide to a wedding theme and colours.

  • Midsummer Eve

Falls on a Friday between 19 and 25 June. Many people have their own traditions and family to celebrate with, so ask your closest guests first.

  • The weekend after Midsummer

Light nights and school holidays, but many are on their way to holiday. Send the date early.

  • July

Calmer for those at home, harder for those travelling. It is also the warmest month.

  • August and early September

The evenings get darker, so candles and lanterns are needed sooner. You can keep the tables outdoors later into the evening than in June.

A summer wedding and your wedding website

The ceremony time, where to find shade, the last bus and the dress code are what guests ask about in the weeks before. Put them on your wedding website, so the answer is in one place and you do not have to repeat yourselves. On the example pages you can see how it looks to a guest.
