Getting married at Stockholm City Hall: booking, cost and rules
Updated 26 October 2026 · Written by Lysela
You book a civil wedding in Stockholm through the city's online service, Boka vigsel. At Stockholm City Hall (Stadshuset) the city marries couples on Saturdays in the Oval room, a ceremony costs 1,200 kronor and you may bring ten guests. If you would rather marry in a party venue, a restaurant or outdoors, you contact an officiant instead. This guide covers how to book, the rules on the day, what applies if neither of you lives in Sweden and how to tell your guests where to be. For how a civil ceremony works in general, see the guide to a civil wedding in Sweden.

Book a time
You book in the Boka vigsel online service. The city writes that marrying at City Hall is very popular and the wait is often long, so start with the date. You can book before you apply for the eligibility check.
Apply for the eligibility check
You apply to Skatteverket, the Swedish Tax Agency, and the eligibility check is valid for four months. You also get a form for the marriage certificate.
Send the originals
The eligibility certificate and the marriage certificate go as originals to Vigslar Stadshuset, 105 35 Stockholm. They must arrive by the date shown in the online service. If they are late, your ceremony time is cancelled.
Pay the fee
A ceremony at City Hall costs 1,200 kronor. If you do not turn up for the booked time you still have to pay.
Ask the wedding office
Phone 08-508 29 330 on Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday from 09.30 to 11.00, or email vigsel@stockholm.se.

Weekday ceremonies and other places to marry in Stockholm
A weekday ceremony at City Hall takes place in office hours in a conference room, usually on a Tuesday early in the month, and you can book about a month ahead. No guests are allowed. City Hall staff act as witnesses.
If you want to marry in a party venue, a restaurant or outdoors, you contact an officiant on the city's list and email the date, time and place. If the officiant can marry you, you get a booking code. You then register in Boka vigsel and email the code and the wedding date to vigsel@stockholm.se at least 14 days before the ceremony. The fee is 1,200 kronor, and you pay the officiant's travel costs. The list also shows who only marries at City Hall.
Every municipality in Stockholm County holds weddings. The County Administrative Board's website lists officiants in each one.
Getting married in Stockholm if you live abroad
The ceremony at City Hall is held in Swedish or English. Both of you must understand it, so if either of you understands neither language you book an interpreter through the wedding office. The interpreter costs nothing, but if you miss a booked ceremony you pay for the interpreter. Your witnesses do not need to understand Swedish.
You apply for the eligibility check at Skatteverket, and the application costs nothing. If neither of you is registered as resident in Sweden, you need documents from authorities at home: a certificate of civil status, preferably issued within the last four months, ID that shows your age and a declaration about family ties on the application form. You must also show that you may marry under the law of your country of citizenship, for example with a marriage certificate.

The ceremony and the party on your wedding website
With Lysela, you put the ceremony venue and the party venue under Places, each with an address, a time, a note and a link for directions. The programme has a calendar link, and on the wedding day the page shows at the top what is happening now and next and when the next bus leaves. Guests answer the RSVP on their phone, with no app and no account. All of that is in every tier, from Bas. From Plus the site also comes with English headings, buttons and RSVP form for guests who do not read Swedish.
You start without an account and pay once, SEK 795, SEK 1,795 or SEK 4,900 including VAT, and the site stays up for 12 months.
