Civil wedding in Uppsala: City Hall, booking and rules
Updated 26 October 2026 · Written by Lysela
You book a civil wedding in Uppsala with BankID on the municipality's booking page. At Uppsala City Hall (Stadshuset) the municipality marries couples on Saturdays between 12.00 and 15.00, the room seats 20 guests and you need two witnesses. If you would rather marry somewhere else in Uppsala, you choose an officiant from the municipality's list and book the time yourselves. This guide covers booking, the rules on the day, what applies if neither of you lives in Uppsala and how to tell your guests where to go. For how a civil ceremony works in general, see the guide to a civil wedding in Sweden.

Apply for the eligibility check
You both apply to Skatteverket, the Swedish Tax Agency, and processing times vary, so start early. The eligibility check is valid for four months and must be valid on the wedding day.
Book a time
You book with BankID at borgerligvigsel.uppsala.se. Available times are shown in the booking calendar. If you want to marry within ten days, contact the municipality's Kontaktcenter, which checks whether a time is available.
Send in the certificates
The eligibility certificate and the marriage certificate form must reach Kontaktcenter at least ten days before the ceremony. You can hand them in at City Hall, post them or upload them as a PDF on the municipality's website.
After the ceremony
You get a wedding certificate as a keepsake, but it is not a legal document. Kontaktcenter sends the papers to Skatteverket, and you are married once Skatteverket has registered the ceremony. That normally takes ten working days.
Contact
Kontaktcenter is on 018-727 00 00 or uppsala.kommun@uppsala.se. The number 076-696 07 77 is only for questions about a ceremony you have booked for that same day.
Wedding at Uppsala City Hall: times, guests and witnesses
The room seats 20 guests. For fire safety no more than 32 people may be there at once, and that count includes the couple, the guests, the officiant and the wedding hosts. Decide early who comes. There is more on choosing a wedding photographer in a guide of its own.

Civil wedding officiants in Uppsala and weddings elsewhere
If you want to marry outdoors, at home or in a party venue, you first contact an officiant to agree on the date, time and place. The municipality keeps its own list with names, phone numbers and email addresses, and the County Administrative Board appoints the officiants. Then you book the time at borgerligvigsel.uppsala.se/boka/egen-tid. The officiants only marry couples near Uppsala.
At a ceremony outside City Hall you arrange the witnesses yourselves, and you plan parts of the ceremony yourselves. From 1 January 2027 you are also responsible for the officiant's travel compensation. The ceremony is held in Swedish or English there too.
Getting married in Uppsala municipality if you live elsewhere
You do not have to live in Uppsala to marry there, but both of you must be present. If neither of you is registered as resident in Uppsala municipality, you pay an administrative fee of 1,000 kronor when you book from 1 January 2027. The municipality's page mentions no other fee.
If either of you understands neither Swedish nor English, the ceremony must be interpreted. The interpreter can be a guest or someone you arrange yourselves. The eligibility check costs nothing. If neither of you is registered in Sweden you need documents from home, for example a certificate of civil status, preferably from the last four months, and a document that shows your age.

The ceremony and the party on your wedding website
With Lysela, you put the ceremony venue and the party venue under Places, each with an address, a time, a note and a link for directions. The programme has a calendar link, and on the wedding day the page shows at the top what is happening now and next and when the next bus leaves. Guests answer the RSVP on their phone, with no app and no account. All of that is in every tier, from Bas. From Plus the site also comes with English headings, buttons and RSVP form for guests who do not read Swedish.
You start without an account and pay once, SEK 795, SEK 1,795 or SEK 4,900 including VAT, and the site stays up for 12 months.
