Wedding in Stockholm: venues, archipelago, manors and ceremony
Updated 26 October 2026 · Written by Lysela
Planning a wedding in Stockholm starts with two choices: where you marry and where you celebrate. The ceremony can be at City Hall, in a church or at a place you choose, and the party in the city, by the water, in the archipelago or at a castle or manor outside town. What sets Stockholm apart is the journey. Boats, metro and buses decide when guests arrive and when they can leave. This guide covers getting married in Stockholm, Stockholm wedding venues, the archipelago, castles and manors, the rules on bringing your own drinks and what guests need to know.
Try it yourself, no accountGetting married in Stockholm: City Hall, church or a place you choose
For a civil wedding at City Hall you book with the city, and the steps are in the guide to a civil wedding in Stockholm. It also explains how to marry outdoors in Stockholm: you contact an officiant on the city's list with the date, time and place.
For a church wedding, one of you must be a member of the Church of Sweden. You send a wedding request to the parish, and after booking you get a priest who arranges a wedding conversation. Before the ceremony you need an eligibility check from Skatteverket, valid for four months.
Stockholm wedding venues: city, waterfront and castle
There are venues in the city, by the water and in districts such as Bromma, out in the archipelago and in castles and manors around the county. The table shows what each suits and what to ask. The price depends on the date, the number of guests and what is included, so ask for a quote with everything itemised. The guide to a wedding venue has more questions.
| Setting | Suits you if you | Ask the venue |
|---|---|---|
| In the city | want guests from elsewhere to find their way and stay close. | How late can we stay, and how do guests get home after midnight? |
| By the water | want wedding photos and a drink by the quay or the jetty. | Is there a room indoors if it rains or turns cold? |
| In the archipelago | want the whole day in one place, often with an overnight stay. | When is the last boat, and where do guests sleep? |
| Castle or manor | want ceremony, dinner and rooms in one place. | How many rooms are there, and how do guests get there without a car? |
| A district like Bromma | want to be in town but outside the centre. | How far is it from the hotels and from the nearest stop? |
Wedding in the Stockholm archipelago: boats, rooms and the last trip home
For an archipelago wedding in Stockholm the boat times frame the whole day. Grinda Wärdshus says on its site that the trip from Stockholm takes a little over an hour and that Waxholmsbolaget and Cinderellabåtarna run several trips a day. Utö Värdshus can only be reached by boat and has about 80 rooms and hotel cottages. A manor wedding can be closer: Häringe Slott in Västerhaninge says it is 25 minutes south of Stockholm and has 68 rooms.
The boat companies publish their own timetables at waxholmsbolaget.se, and SL's journey planner is at sl.se. Count backwards from the last trip and put the times in your timeline. If guests need a bus, wedding shuttle bus is the next step.
Wedding in Stockholm with your own drinks: the rules
The Swedish Public Health Agency (Folkhälsomyndigheten) writes that a restaurant may not allow guests, in a closed party or any other group, to bring alcohol into its premises. The rule covers both storing and drinking, whether the restaurant has a temporary or a permanent licence. If the restaurant wants to serve the party alcohol, it applies for a temporary licence, for a closed party or for the public.
So if you want a Stockholm venue where you bring your own food and drink, ask first. A restaurant will usually say no, and a venue that is not a restaurant has its own terms. Also ask whether you may bring your own food or must use the venue's caterer.
Hello, we are planning a wedding on [date] with about [number] guests. Is the venue a restaurant with a serving licence, and what applies to drinks? May we bring our own food, or do we use your caterer? What is included in the hire, and what comes on top? Kind regards [name] and [name]
Messages for guests when the wedding is in Stockholm
Guests travelling to Stockholm want to know where to be, how to get there and where to sleep. Replace what is in square brackets.
We are celebrating on [island or place]. The boat leaves from [pier] at [time] and arrives at about [time]. The last boat back leaves at [time]. The current timetable is on the boat company's site. Book your room early, there are few.
The ceremony is on [date] at [time] at [place]. From [hotel] take the [metro or bus] to [stop], and it is a [number] minute walk from there. The bus to the party leaves from [place] at [time].
If you have not been to Stockholm before, public transport is the easiest way. Plan your journey in the SL app or on sl.se. Write to us if you would like to travel with other guests.

Places
The ceremony, the party and any pre-party go in as separate places, each with an address and a link for directions.
Buses and boats
Under Buses you enter from, to and time, and a note. A boat departure or the last trip home fits there.
Accommodation
Hotels and other tips go in with a link, so guests book for themselves.
The programme
The day's programme gets a calendar link that guests add to their phones.

Places, boats and accommodation on your wedding website
With Lysela you put the ceremony and the party venue under Places, with an address, a time and a link for directions. Under Buses you write the boat departures and the buses home, and under Accommodation the hotels you want to suggest. Guests reply to the RSVP on their phones, with no app and no account, and you see the allergies in the list. On the wedding day the page shows at the top what is happening now and next, and when the next bus leaves. All of this is in every tier, from Bas. From Plus the page also has English headings, buttons and RSVP forms for guests who do not read Swedish.
You start without an account and pay once, SEK 795, SEK 1,795 or SEK 4,900 including VAT, and the site stays up for 12 months.
What usually goes on a wedding website, and what one costs, is in the checklist.
Frequently asked questions
How do we marry outdoors in Stockholm?
Outdoors works with a civil ceremony at a place you choose, though not at City Hall. You contact an officiant on the city's list with the date, time and place. The steps are in the guide to a civil wedding in Stockholm.
What does a wedding venue in Stockholm cost?
It varies with the date, the number of guests and what is included, so we give no amounts. Ask for a quote where hire, cleaning, staff and drinks are listed separately.
Can we bring our own drinks to a wedding in Stockholm?
The Public Health Agency writes that a restaurant may not allow guests to bring alcohol into its premises. Ask the venue what applies before you book.
How do guests get to a wedding in the archipelago?
Mostly by boat. Waxholmsbolaget and other companies publish timetables on their own sites. Start from the last trip home and put the times on your wedding website.
