Book a time
You book in the Boka vigsel online service from the City of Västerås, at least 14 days before the date you want. Ceremonies are held on weekdays and at weekends. If your date is not in the calendar, or you want to marry somewhere else, email vigsel@vasteras.se.
Apply for the eligibility check
You apply to Skatteverket, the Swedish Tax Agency, and the eligibility check is valid for four months. Book a time that falls inside those four months.
The fee
From 1 January 2026 a ceremony costs 750 kronor if one or both of you are registered in Västerås municipality, and 1,500 kronor if neither of you is.
Print the eligibility certificate
Bring the approved certificate on paper. The officiant signs it and sends it to Skatteverket, and without a printout the ceremony cannot go ahead. If you need to print it, there is help at the City Hall entrance.
Change or cancel
The date in a booking cannot be changed. You cancel and book again. You cancel with the officiant and by email to vigsel@vasteras.se. If you do not turn up, or cancel less than seven days before, you pay 400 kronor.
Getting married at Västerås City Hall: the Red Room
The city holds weddings in the Red Room in City Hall, a room with red silk wallpaper, crystal chandeliers and a stuccoed ceiling. The chairs come from the old town hall at Fiskartorget. This is what the city writes about the day.

Civil marriage officiants in Västerås and marrying elsewhere
Ceremonies in Västerås are performed by civil marriage officiants appointed by the County Administrative Board of Västmanland. The city handles the bookings, so you book in the online service and do not have to track anyone down yourselves. The County Administrative Board also keeps a list of appointed officiants in the municipality.
If you want to marry outdoors, at home or in a party venue, the ceremony can take place somewhere you and the officiant agree on. The officiant may not charge you for performing the ceremony, but may ask for their actual travel costs. The officiant arranges that with you directly, and emails about the place go to vigsel@vasteras.se.
The city's page does not say who acts as witnesses, so ask when you book.
Hello, we have booked a ceremony in the Red Room on [date] at [time]. We would like to [exchange rings / read a poem] and will be [number] guests. Who will be our witnesses, or should we bring our own? Kind regards [name] and [name]
Getting married in Västerås if you live abroad
Anyone can marry in a civil ceremony in Sweden, including foreign citizens. The ceremony can be held in Swedish or English. If neither of you is registered as resident in Sweden, you order the eligibility check from Skatteverket, which sets out the documents you need.
They are documents from authorities at home: among others a certificate of civil status, preferably issued within the last four months, ID that shows your age and a declaration that you are not closely related. If either of you has been married before you need proof that the marriage has ended. The application costs nothing. Remember to print the approved certificate, and note that the city's fee is 1,500 kronor when neither of you is registered in Västerås.

The ceremony and the party on your wedding website
With Lysela, you put the ceremony venue and the party venue under Places, each with an address, a time, a note and a link for directions. The programme has a calendar link, and on the wedding day the page shows at the top what is happening now and next and when the next bus leaves. Guests answer the RSVP on their phone, with no app and no account. All of that is in every tier, from Bas. From Plus the site also comes with English headings, buttons and RSVP form for guests who do not read Swedish.
You start without an account and pay once, SEK 795, SEK 1,795 or SEK 4,900 including VAT, and the site stays up for 12 months.
