Wedding in Uppsala: church, castle and venues in the city and county
Updated 26 October 2026 · Written by Lysela
For a wedding in Uppsala you can choose Uppsala Cathedral, the city hall, the castle ruins or a farm outside town. You book the church with the Church of Sweden in Uppsala and the civil ceremony with Uppsala municipality. The party can be in a parish hall, a manor hotel or a barn in Uppsala county. Here is what the parish, the municipality and the places themselves write, what to ask about drinks, catering and a photographer, and how guests find their way.
Try it yourself, no accountWedding in Uppsala Cathedral: how to book the church
According to the parish, the church, the verger, the musician and the priest cost nothing, and the two witnesses you need are arranged for you. The cathedral belongs to Domkyrkoförsamlingen. Ask the office what applies there, for example how many guests fit and which times can be booked.
Check the membership
At least one of you must be a member of the Church of Sweden. The parish marries couples of different sexes and of the same sex.
Order the eligibility check
You order the hindersprövning from Skatteverket. If you are both registered in Sweden, do it at least four weeks before the wedding. If one of you is registered abroad, handling currently takes at least three months.
Book the church
The online booking shows a selection of churches, venues and available times. If no time suits, contact Bokning och medlemsservice on 018-430 35 00, who help you book a time and place.
Have a wedding conversation
Before the wedding you talk with the priest, at the church or at your home. The priest and the church musician help you plan the ceremony.
Civil wedding in Uppsala: the city hall and other places
Uppsala municipality takes bookings for civil ceremonies at borgerligvigsel.uppsala.se, where you log in with BankID. At the city hall (Stadshuset), Stadshusgatan 2, couples are normally married on Saturdays between 12.00 and 15.00, and the entrance faces Uppsala Resecentrum, the travel centre. The room has 20 seats, and at most 32 people may be in it, counting the couple, guests, officiant and hosts. You can also marry at home, in a garden or somewhere else in or near Uppsala. You then contact one of the municipality's officiants first and book in the system afterwards.
The hindersprövning and the marriage certificate must reach the municipality's contact centre at least ten days before the ceremony. In the rest of Uppsala county you book with the municipality or directly with an officiant, and the County Administrative Board gives you the contact details. Booking, times and witnesses at the City Hall are in the guide to civil weddings in Uppsala.
The ceremony at the city hall in Uppsala is small, and only [number] of you can be in the room. The entrance faces Uppsala Resecentrum. We meet straight afterwards at [venue], [address], at [time].
Wedding at Uppsala Castle and other wedding venues in Uppsala
Vasaborgen is the ruin of the original Uppsala Castle from the 1500s. You can book ceremonies and mingles there all year, except during the summer museum season. The site says they cannot take larger groups, so ask about your guest numbers before you decide. The party will have to be somewhere else, and here are a few venues, chosen as examples.
| Place | What it is | Worth asking about |
|---|---|---|
| Vasaborgen, Uppsala Castle | The castle ruin at Kung Jans port, for ceremonies and mingles. | How many guests fit, since larger groups cannot be taken. |
| Krusenberg Herrgård | A manor hotel just outside Uppsala with a wedding package and rooms in three buildings. | How many guests the rooms hold and what the package includes. |
| Parish halls | The main hall of Sankt Per church (up to 52 people), the hall at Vindhem church (50) and Almtunasalen (75). | The halls are booked through Bokning och medlemsservice for an hourly fee. Two of them are not fully accessible. |
Country wedding and barn wedding in Uppsala county
Kroksta Gård lies about 10 kilometres north-west of Uppsala along road 272. The farm offers weddings together with accommodation, and the wedding hall, the Loge, seats up to 100 guests. Rooms with breakfast are in the main building.
The Fjärdhundraland tourist site collects places for a country wedding near Uppsala, Stockholm and Västerås: a wedding barn, an old hayloft that holds up to 100 people, several village halls to hire for a party, and a night in a B&B or a glamping tent. If you are looking for a wedding venue outside Uppsala, the questions are the same as anywhere: number of guests, overnight stays, what is included and how guests get there and home. More questions are in the guide to a wedding venue.
Own drinks, catering and photographer for a wedding in Uppsala
Uppsala municipality writes that anyone serving alcohol to a limited number of guests chosen in advance needs a serving permit. An exception applies to a single occasion for set people, without a profit motive, in a venue that does not sell alcohol commercially. If you need a permit, you apply at least ten working days beforehand, and the fee for a temporary permit is 1,000 kronor. Under such a permit guests may not drink alcohol they have brought themselves, and what is served must be bought at Systembolaget. If the venue has a serving permit of its own, ask what applies to drinks you bring before you book.
On catering, ask whether the venue has its own food or lets you hire a caterer, and whether you may use the kitchen and crockery. The parish halls do not lend out kitchen and crockery for food you bring. As for the photographer, ask the priest or the officiant what applies during the ceremony, and give the photographer times and places in advance. There is more in the guide to a wedding photographer.

Guests: getting to Uppsala and finding the right place
